Achievement hunting can be a perfect time killer, a competitive battlefield or a self-made challenge to overcome the games hardest challenges to gain that sense of pride and accomplishment and more important bragging rights. Myself have only recently discovered how much fun the grind is and has encouraged me to play games I normally wouldn’t play just for that sweet trophy count and Gamerscore, and as the year is coming to a close and not many releases left to go I thought I would make a list of my top 5 favorite trophy grinds that I’ve done this year. Enjoy!
5 – Marvel’s Spider-Man
It’s no secret I loved this game if you haven’t yet read my review of this game check it out after this post but also as a trophy grind is was so much fun. This game comes at number 5 because there isn’t as much challenge involved as some of the others, but Spider-man does require you to take the time out to go get those collectibles or pull of some combos during combat you usually wouldn’t try. Spider-man delivered for me as a satisfying Platinum trophy and has even got me to play through New Game+ on Ultimate mode just for 2 extra trophies. On top of that Spider-man currently holds one of the most common Platinum trophies currently on PSN currently sitting at a huge 50% so this game is a great starter out for someone looking into getting into the art of Achievement hunting.
4 – Dark Souls 3
It goes without saying that Dark Souls 3 or any of From Software’s games aren’t an easy 100% but that is one of the main reasons it makes my list because the challenge is there and the feeling of getting any sort of an trophy really feels like you worked for it. The Dark souls/Bloodborne series of games solidifies the fact that players are still looking for a challenging experience and when it came to playing Dark Souls 3 once I beat the game I wanted to go back and 100% this game even to the point of collecting every single weapon/shield and piece of armor in the game which isn’t even an trophy. I would’ve put this higher up on my list but there is one trophy that prevents it from going further… Collect all Rings. This trophy requires 4 full playthroughs to be able to collect all the New Game+ rings up to New Game+3 and is the only trophy I have yet to get on this game.
3 – God of War
God of war is one of those games where the contrast between fun and enticing gameplay and challenging gameplay met an almost perfect balance. It makes this point of the list for me because the majority of trophy were achieved by just playing through the game as normal and then there were some challenging trophies through Niflheim and Muspelheim with their challenge mode maps as well as the Valkyries. This was a relatively long platinum to get for me, but I think that more came about wanting to explore every inch of this absolutely gorgeous creation of a game and when I hit that Platinum trophy I came out wanting more and it’s was honestly quite sad having to uninstall it to make space for more games.
2 – Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank was a PS2 classic and very much the mascots of my childhood, so naturally when I received this game for free on PSN I was very excited to get playing again as my childhood gaming hero’s. Little did I know that not only was this a good time but also a challenging platinum trophy! This game required multiple playthroughs I ended up doing 3 as I missed 1 enemy to use the Groovitron with… But it didn’t bother me (much) I was more than happy to run through the game once more just to make every enemy in the game dance. This game is a perfect example of how to do a remaster and I’m hoping for many more Ratchet & Clank games to come.
1 – Dishonored 2
Now I know what you’re thinking Dishonored 2, really? And yeah Dishonored 2 is my number 1 Trophy hunt this year and I’ll tell you why. Not only is this game extremely fun to play and a fantastic sequel to one of my all-time favorite games it provided a unique and challenging trophy hunt. Dishonored 2 has no trophies in which you must complete certain parts of the game on a specific difficulty level, but it requires great challenge and game knowledge to 100% this game. Dishonored 2 requires multiple playthroughs in which in each playthrough you will have to change up your play style for each run of the game, it is possible to achieve 100% with just 2 playthroughs but one playthrough will require you to not use any powers, never be spotted and never kill anyone which on easy mode is still a giant challenge. I managed to achieve platinum in 3 playthroughs my first being how I wanted to play, stealthy but kill everyone. My second playthrough consisted of not being spotted and not killing anyone which was without doubt my hardest playthrough even playing on easy mode and lastly my 3rd playthrough was with no powers. Each playthrough required me to approach each level with a new approach and be able to utilize certain level design choices and mechanics throughout the game and because of this I never got bored whilst grinding out the platinum trophy and therefore I gladly give Dishonored 2 my top spot on this list.
I didn’t want to drag this list out to long but there are some games I’ve played this year that deserve a mention on this post and some games I’m still grinding out but having a great time with.
Stardew Valley is a well-known indie game and is one of the most relaxing and rewarding games I’ve ever played, the beautiful art style, the mesmerizing melody’s and fun gameplay Stardew valley is in one of my favorite indie games to date. Stardew Valley provides challenging achievements in which will require dedication and time, but every achievement feels deserved and satisfying.
I didn’t think much of Rime when I first booted it up and started playing but I needed to kill some time, so I continued to play, and was pleasantly surprised on how it turned out. Rime has a very shader and cartoony look to it which got me interested in the first place, but it provided unique and interesting puzzles to progress through and a mysterious story. In terms of trophies there was nothing to challenging apart from a few collectibles to find but it was a fun little game and a fun Platinum trophy to obtain.
There’s not much I can say about Doom because I am literally playing through it right now, I’m taking time out of playing it to write this very post. With that said I’m having a blast playing through this game and grinding out trophies. The genius level design is a wonder to explore and it provides a challenging and puzzling experience as well as being able to enjoy the little things such as mass murdering demons to metal music.
Agree or Disagree with my list let me know in the comments!
